West Tyrone Sinn Féin Councillor Glenn Campbell has expressed his disappointment the Employers for Childcare Vouchers scheme will close for new entrants in April.

Speaking ahead of the planned closure, Cllr Campbell said,

"This scheme allows employees at participating companies to have up to £243 per month paid from their salary to their childcare provider before deduction of tax and national insurance contributions. This saves up to £943 per year (£77 per month), which can be doubled if both parents or guardians access the scheme". Stressing that the scheme will remain operational to current participants, Cllr Campbell urged anyone not in the scheme to consider joining before the end of March. He also advised that those currently accessing the scheme should check if the alternative Tax-Free Childcare scheme can offer greater savings.

"People should consider joining the scheme. But they should also consider the Tax-Free Childcare scheme, which offers savings of 20% per child up to a maximum of £2000 per year (or £4,000 for a child with a disability). This might be more beneficial to a family with multiple children under the age of 4 in full-time childcare.

Concluding, Cllr Campbell said,

"Everyone's situation with regards to childcare is unique and people should seek advice from Employers for Childcare on how to proceed (freephone: 0800 028 3008). It is regrettable and disappointing that the Tory/DUP led British Government plans to close the Childcare Vouchers scheme to new entrants and I am supporting the call to reverse this decision and keep the scheme open. Working families already struggle with childcare costs and it does seem unfair that the scheme is being limited. Full continuation of this scheme would provide an opportunity for more families to make savings."
