Sinn Féin MLA Declan McAleer has said clarity from the Infrastructure Minister on taxi meters and printers is welcome.

The Sinn Féin infrastructure spokesperson said:

"My party colleague and infrastructure minister Chris Hazzard has announced the legislation on taxi meters and printers will come into force from October 1.

"I welcome the clarity this announcement gives to taxi drivers on this important issue.

"There have been some concerns among drivers and I also welcome the fact that the minister has announced that a 'light touch' towards enforcement will continue as long as drivers can prove that they have a test date booked.

"Hopefully this will clear up some of the uncertainty and address the problems that were left from the previous department."

"I have held several meetings with the Omagh Taxi Association who raised several concerns about the category C licence being exploited and I commend the ministers' commitment to addressing these issues and ensure that the licence is only used for the purpose intended in the legislation.

"I commend the initiative of the taxi drivers in Omagh in setting up the Association so that they can have a coordinated approach to implement the new legislation.

"As a member of the Infrastructure Committee I will continue to engage with taxi drivers and ensure that their concerns are voiced in the Taxi Forum which is being set-up by the minister."
