West Tyrone Sinn Fein MLA Declan McAleer has given a warm welcome to the announcement by Infrastructure Minister and party colleague Chris Hazard of a £10m investment to improve rural roads.
The party's infrastructure spokesperson said,
"The deteriorating state of our rural roads has been an issue local Sinn Féin MLAs and Councillors have been continually lobbying Transport Ni on as well as Minister Chris Hazard since he took over the Infrastructure portfolio.
Earlier this month, Barry Mc Elduff MLA tabled an Assembly motion calling for more money for rural roads and the adjournment debate brought a much needed focus on the issue.
"Today's £10m investment announcement by the Minister shows he has listened to our concerns and is making a determined effort, despite tight budgetary constraints, to address the hitherto neglect of our rural road infrastructure.
"This investment will see road surfacing improvement work to around 1,000 rural roads both locally and across the north and with programmes of work currently being drawn up work is scheduled to begin immediately.
As the Minister said in his announcement,
"Today will go some way to addressing that imbalance and giving rural communities across the region roads that are fit for purpose and that will stand the test of time and weather."
