Safety fencing erected following subsidence at Weir Walk in Sion-Mc Mahon

Published: 27 June, 2016

Sinn Féin Councillor Brian Mc Mahon has been liaising with Derry City and Strabane District Council over the weekend to ensure the erection of safety fencing at a stretch of the Weir Walk on the River Mourne at Sion Mills after a section of the riverbank subsided in the early hours of Saturday.

He said,

"Following subsidence of a section of the river bank along the Weir Walk the main immediate concern of local people has been to ensure safety especially given the risk of any further subsidence and because the river runs very deep along this stretch.

"Given these concerns, I have been liaising with Council staff and through weekend emergency arrangements that are in place have ensured that outside contractor was brought in to erect safety fencing as a short term measure.

"Following this initial intervention Council is now also in contact with the Rivers Agency and in the coming days a wider assessment will have to be undertaken to assess the extent of subsidence and to enable works to be undertaken to re-enforce and repair the banking and walkway.
