West Tyrone Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Anger at Huge Bluebox Blackout

Published: 24 May, 2016

Sinn Féin have hit out at Satellite broadband providers, Bluebox after there was a huge outage of their service across Tyrone. West Tyrone MLA Barry McElduff and local councillor Barry McNally have spoken out after many of their constituents were left without any broadband coverage.

Speaking on the issue local MLA Barry McElduff said:

"My constituency office in Omagh has been inundated with calls of constituents who are affected by the blackout. It is a very serious situation with the huge number of people affected. I have been contacted by Businesses who are being fined for not having tax returns submitted on time due to their internet being down. With every passing day this fine gets bigger and there is very little companies can do about it.

"Constituents have related how they cannot make contact with representatives from Bluebox to get any indication, officially, of the cause of the blackout or when it could be fixed. I have already been in contact with The Department of the Economy, (formerly DETI) the Consumer Council and OFCOM in relation to this and am determined to stick with this until the issue is resolved.

Having spoken to some of those directly affected Mid Tyrone Councillor Barry McNally said it was not acceptable that customers are left in limbo:

"People in Mid Tyrone are poorly served by the traditional Broadband providers and many have had to look at alternative means of getting sufficient coverage for their homes and business. This has seen a large demand for satellite provision provided through Bluebox. However with that comes responsibility, but it is simply not good enough to leave customers in limbo.CRÍOCH
