Sinn Féin Welcome Preferred Location of Mental Health Unit

Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff has welcomed the announcement from Health Minister Simon Hamilton that Omagh is the preferred location for a Mental Health Inpatient Unit.

Speaking after Mr Hamilton's statement, the West Tyrone MLA said:

"I welcome this announcement that Omagh will be the preferred location of a Mental Health Unit. This was something which was articulated by public representatives, the public, the Western Trust and, crucially, professional clinicians during the consultation period. This issue is one which we, as elected representatives, have been focused on for the past number of years so we are satisfied that the Minister has listened to the views of those who matter in these cases when making his decision.

"Looking ahead the key challenge is to make sure that the maximum range of health services are made available at the enhanced hospital in Omagh. As well as acute mental health services, other key health services should also be delivered at this location. It is one thing having an impressive building. It is quite another, however, having the maximum range of services provided within that building."

Adding her support to the announcement was Mid Tyrone Councillor and Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson locally, Anne Marie Fitzgerald:

"This is a long overdue announcement, but one that is welcome nonetheless. We met with various Health Ministers over recent years to ensure that the new Mental Health Unit would be based in Omagh. With the announcement we are relieved that this finally brings some clarity to the issue. It is my hope that we can all work together in the time ahead to progress this issue but, certainly, this is a common sense decision by the Minister." CRÍOCH
