Sinn Féin delegation meet Road Service

A delegation of Sinn Féin elected representatives led by West Tyrone MLA Barry McElduff met with senior Road Service officials last Friday (18th March) regarding the poor state of roads in the Omagh District. Joining him at the meeting were local councillors Anne-Marie Fitzgerald, Barry McNally, Glenn Campbell, Sean Clarke, Sean Donnelly and Stephen McCann.

Explaining the rationale behind the meeting Mr McElduff said,

'I, like many of our elected councillors, have been lobbied on numerous road maintenance issues over the past number of months. People are dissatisfied at the level of repairs and maintenance on local roads. Councillors have been in contact with me to raise the issue on an Assembly level directly with the Minister, which I have done. However, we also believed it was important to meet with the local division of the Road Service to highlight our concerns directly and to bring urgent matters to their attention regarding local roads.

Whilst we understand that the Road Service is under severe pressure with reductions to their financial allocation from central government due to British Tory austerity, we are reflecting the growing sense of frustration amongst local people. Despite this, the meeting was helpful and allowed local councillors and myself to highlight serious issues and air our concerns. We will continue to lobby Road Service on behalf of local communities and ensure their voice is heard when it comes to roads maintenance in the local district.'
