Minister O'Neill tours new £1.5m flood scheme

Published: 19 February, 2016

Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill has heard how extensive consultation between Rivers Agency and a Tyrone community has helped deliver an agreed flood protection scheme. In 2008 and 2011, Beragh experienced significant flooding following torrential rainfall. The completed £1.5 million Beragh Flood Alleviation Scheme provides flood protection to 19 properties, at three different locations within the village. Further works planned by the Beragh Red Knights GAA Club will integrate with works already completed by Rivers Agency and will provide flood protection to the sports pavilion. During a visit to meet with residents and inspect the new flood scheme Minister O'Neill said: "It is very encouraging to see how a high level of engagement between the local community and Rivers Agency engineers has helped to shape a new flood protection scheme for Beragh. "Rivers Agency has worked very closely with the local community throughout the development of this scheme and also to incorporate changes requested by the local community and GAA club delivering multiple benefits and providing a good example of joint co-operation between DARD and residents." While touring the new flood walls, the Minister met with local community representatives to hear about the benefits of the scheme and how their homes were protected from flooding during the most recent winter storms and against future floods. "The work of my department has always been to reduce the risk to life and damage to property from flooding so it very encouraging to hear about the protection and reassurance this scheme, which included the construction of some 900m of steel sheet pile and reinforced concrete flood walls, gives to the people of Beragh. "I have also been advised that the outstanding works planned by the Red Knights, GAA Club, to provide flood protection to the pavilion, are currently being designed and are due for completion further on this year", the Minister added.
