McAleer congratulates emergency services on Flood response
Published: 6 December, 2015
Commenting on the effects of flooding across many areas of the North Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Declan McAleer congratulated the emergency services, particularly the Fire Service who dealt with over 30 incidents including the rescue of 10 people at a housing development in Strabane.
Mr McAleer said:
"The widespread flooding caused major problems across the North with counties Tyrone, Derry and Fermanagh worst affected.
"Major flooding seem to have become a yearly problem and I would urge the Regional Development Minister to take steps to better prevent flooding by identifying those areas most prone to it.
"Every year it seems that the same areas are the worst effected and it is incumbent on the Minister to ensure that every available remedy is utilized to address the problem.
"Former DRD Minister Danny Kennedy was warned of the consequence of his false economy approach to spending priorities and this weekend's flooding is testament to his failure to listen.
"Householders should apply immediately for financial assistance for any damage or loss they have suffered.
"Given the dangerous road conditions still pertaining following the flooding I urge people to travel only if necessary and those concerned about flooding should call the 24-hour helpline on 0300 2000 100."
