Spamount Recycling location a 'non-runner'- McHugh

Published: 7 December, 2015

Sinn Féin Councillor Ruairí Mc Hugh has said any proposal to site a new recycling facility at Spamount would be a 'non-runner' due to the site being in the wrong location and more importantly, the Spamount community do not want it.

His comments come after mounting speculation from within the Spamount community that Council had already arrived at a decision to site a new recycling facility on spare ground to the rear of the current Spamount playing fields which the Castlederg Councillor says is absouloutely not the case.

In raising the issue at the most recent meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council the Derg based Councillor who represents the Spamount area said
'' Firstly, it was with some surprise that I learned from concerned residents that council officers had been on site at Spamount to scope out the possibility of siting a reycling facility for the Castlederg area there.

' Having discussed the matter with Council officers I am satisfied that despite the Spamount site having indeed been identified as a potential location for such a facility, it has been earmarked through a scoping excercise as only one of several other possible locations for a new recycling facility and it would by no means be the preferred option.

' Furthermore, having attended a packed public meeting in the local Spamount Community Hall on this issue, I would have to impress upon officers the views of those present which were entirely opposed to any potential siting of such a facility in their community.

' In saving time and rate payer money it would be very prudent of council officers to not only take on board the views of the local community expressed at that meeting but also the opinions of myself and indeed those of my fifteen Sinn Féin colleagues on this council which would be entirely in tandem with the sentiments expressed by the Spamount community. As far as I am concerned, it is a non-runner" - ends.
