West Tyrone Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Cross border action needed to prevent further flooding

Published: 17 November, 2015

Sinn Féin representatives in Castlederg, Aghyaran, Clady, Ballybofey and Castlefinn have called for action following severe flooding across these areas over the past week. Speaking this week Sinn Féin representative Grace McDermott said, "Sinn Féin representatives have been out and about over the past number of days in Castlederg, Aghyaran, Castlefinn, Ballybofey and Clady assisting local residents and businesses who were affected by the severe flooding. "Low lying areas adjacent to the Rivers Finn, Derg and Mourne are always at a certain degree of flood risk, but given the increasing frequency and severity of flooding along these rivers and in particular it's risk to residential, commercial and community buildings, it is incumbent that a review of existing 'flood risk assessments' be undertaken and remedial plans be put in place on a cross border basis to try to reduce the increasing risks now being presented. "We have also requested an urgent meeting with Rivers Agency and Loughs Agency to discuss these issues further. The severe flooding in these areas has been the worst we may have possibly seen and I would like to commend the local community and all agencies and organisations who played their part in assisting those who were in need over the past number of days."
