McHugh welcomes protections for Castlederg library

Sinn Féin councillor Ruairi McHugh has welcomed protections that were put in place to ensure the opening hours at Castlederg library were not reduced.

The Derg councillor said,

"Libraries play a vital role in the life of rural areas and provide essential services for local communities.

"Given the reductions to the DCAL budget as a result of the British government cuts to the block grant, there had been some concerns about library opening hours.

"Thankfully those concerns have now been addressed and I welcome the commitment from the library boards that no library will see its opening hours drop below 18 hours.

"I particularly welcome the fact that Castlederg library will see no reduction in their opening hours.

"There will also be no reduction to the mobile library service which provides a real lifeline to people in rural communities.

"I would like to commend the minister Caral NiChuilin and her department for their work to protect libraries in rural areas.

"I will continue to work with the minister, her department and local councils to ensure our rural libraries are well resourced and provide a first-class service to local people."
