Public meeting to discuss lack of broadband and mobile coverage in rural West Tyrone

West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty and Declan Mc Aleer MLA will jointly host a public meeting on rural broadband and mobile phone coverage in Aughabrack Community Hall, County Tyrone on Thursday 19th March at 7.30pm. Speaking ahead of the meeting, Mr Doherty said; "Access to reliable broadband in rural areas is an essential basic service, but unfortunately many parts of the Sperrins and its hinterland cannot avail of it. "Mobile phone coverage is also a major concern for people living in the area. "Not only is access to good quality broadband essential for rural businesses to grow and develop, it is also invaluable in everyday life to help tackle rural isolation. Mr Mc Aleer added "The Sperrins region has been particularly affected by poor coverage and this is having a detrimental impact on rural businesses and on farmers who are increasingly encouraged to access information and complete their Single Farm Payment applications online. "The meeting will receive an update from BT Broadband Management, Rural Community Network and representatives of Vodafone and O2. Our objective is to draw attention to the issue of poor connectivity and lobby for a greater focus on this region. "It would be important for as many people as possible to come along to give the broadband and mobile providers a sense of how the inadequate coverage is affecting their lives and livelihoods. We therefore extend an open invitation to everyone".
