Doherty calls on parties to support O'Dowds call for further Education funds

West Tyrone Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty has called for all executive parties to support the Education minister John O'Dowd's call for more money for Education at Final budget stage.

Speaking after discussions with the minister the local MP said,

"As a direct result of the British Government's economic policies the amount of money the Executive has to spend on public services continues to be reduced. Sinn Féin negotiated strongly to protect the Education budget and as a result the reductions are much less than first proposed.

"We support the demands of the school communities for more money for Education in the Final Budget and we actively encouraged and worked closely with schools across the district to ensure their concerns were fed into the budget consultation and also to Theresa Villiers.

"Sinn Féin will continue to engage with other Executive parties in regards to the Education Budget and explore how we can secure further funding for frontline education services including schools and youth services from current resources. We will also explore how we can secure more money for the Education capital budget.

"Now is the time for other parties who have been criticising the draft budget to step up to the mark and support this call. I am confident if this approach is taken then there will be more money for Education."
