Savings to be made from the use of generic medicines- Boyle

Published: 12 December, 2014

West Tyrone Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle has this week called on the health minister to look into the use of generic medicines as a way of making savings.

Ms Boyle made the suggestion during a debate on cuts within the Western Trust area.

Speaking after the debate the local MLA said,

"There is growing concern in the Western Trust area about proposed cuts to frontline health services, particularly at the Tyrone County Hospital and Tyrone and Fermanagh Hospital in Omagh.

"In my view not enough is being done to identify opportunities for income generation or ways in which savings can be made.

"One perfect example of savings being made was in the Western Trust area in Castlederg when the use of generic medicines as opposed to branded, over a 5 week period resulted in an annual saving of £312,000. If this was rolled out throughout the north it is estimated as saving in the region of £40million.

"The Public Accounts Committee which I chair is now also looking into the matter and I will be putting pressure on the new health minister to look into this further at a meeting we have scheduled with all six West Tyrone MLA's in the new-year."
