Doherty welcomes Rugby World Cup bid

Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty has welcomed an all-Ireland bid to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023.

Speaking after the bid was announced Mr Doherty said,

"This bid to host the 2023 Rugby World Cup in Ireland would provide a tremendous boost to the entire island if successful.

"We have demonstrated in the past that we have the ability to host large-scale international events to the highest standard.

"In 2007 the Rugby World Cup was broadcast in over 200 countries and attracted a television audience of billions so the potential audience is huge.

"It would involve teams coming to Ireland weeks in advance of the competition starting for training camps, providing a major boost to the tourism industry and that's before supporters from across the world descend."
