Doherty to host seminar on the local impact of a British referendum on EU membership

Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone Pat Doherty will this week host a seminar in the Fir Trees Hotel, Strabane, regarding the prospect of a British Referendum on EU membership and how this would affect the island of Ireland.

The event will take place on Friday 14th November at 2pm in the Fir Trees Hotel and speakers will include Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson and Ruth Taillon from the Centre for Cross Border Studies.

Speaking ahead of the event Pat Doherty said,

"I would invite any interested party to attend the seminar this week. The prospect of a British Referendum on EU membership will have major implications for the whole of Ireland. It would be ridiculous that our already partitioned island would be further divided with the north being removed from the EU in the event of Britain voting to leave.

This will impact heavily on All-Ireland trade and it will create great difficulties in terms of the north being able to access the single market. I would have great concerns about the potential for a huge economic and social disparity emerging in the aftermath. A border poll will be needed more than ever should Britain decide to leave the European Union."
