McHugh appeals for safe and responsible use of fireworks this Halloween

Derg Sinn Féin councillor Ruairi McHugh has appealed for the safe and responsible use of fireworks this Halloween.

Cllr McHugh said:

"By all means enjoy the festivities at Halloween, but be safe and do not let what should be a bit of fun turn into a nightmare, the consequences of which could be scars or disfigurement, which last a life time.

Not only are fireworks dangerous, but they are also very expensive to buy. I would encourage children and their families to enjoy fireworks at public fireworks displays conducted by professionals rather than purchase fireworks for home or private use. The annual firework display in Castlederg hosted by Churchtown Community Centre will take place on Thursday 30th October at 9pm at the entry to Hillview Park. I would encourage people to attend this event.

The reality is that thousands of fireworks are being sold illegally. In many cases the people selling these fireworks are deliberately targeting young people. In turn a lot of young people are using fireworks unsupervised and irresponsibly resulting in many cases in serious injuries. I call on those who are engaged in this type of activity to stop and reflect on how their actions can cause serious injuries and harm."
