Funding for cycle path extension scheme at Melmount Road welcomed- Boyle

Sinn Féin MLA Michaela Boyle has welcomed news from Transport Minister Danny Kennedy that the first phase of a capital scheme for a £300,000 cycle path at Melmount Road, Strabane has begun.

Work has already begun and will include the construction of 1,250metres of footway/cyclepath on Melmount Road extending from the existing network at the Great Northern Road / Melmount Road roundabout to Beechmount Avenue. The scheme is expected to last for 12 weeks.

This is the first phase of a very welcome planned scheme which will eventually complete the missing link of footway / cyclepath on Melmount Road between the Great Northern Road roundabout and the excellent facility recently provided at Bridge Street.

Ms Boyle said,

"The new DRD cycling unit and the recently established All Party Group on cycling in the assembly has put a major focus on the benefits of cycling in the north. Cycling is experiencing a revolution and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that Strabane and the wider district capitalises on this to the fullest extent. We already have a local cross border cycling club in Strabane and Lifford- if we want to promote the sport and encourage more people in the district to become involved we need to have the correct infrastructure in place to ensure the safety of all road users."
