Invest NI jobs creation figures welcome - Kelly

Published: 27 May, 2014

Omagh Sinn Féin representative Catherine Kelly has welcomed job creation figures recently released by Invest NI.

Miss Kelly said,

"The 11,000 new jobs supported by Invest NI in 2013 are to be welcomed especially by those successful applicants.

"CEO of Invest NI Alastair Hamilton, in releasing the figures confirmed what Sinn Féin has always maintained - that the majority of new and existing jobs are in fact created by indigenous enterprise. For this reason we have always advocated greater emphasis on support for local entrepreneurs.

"While we should continue to seek maximum Foreign Direct Investment - and I commend the First and Joint First Minister in their efforts - I believe that we must also increase our focus on assistance for SMEs who it is acknowledged provide 90% of jobs.

"I would also urge Invest NI when consulting with prospective investors to incentivise them to locate in areas of severe unemployment, especially West of the Bann which has suffered from historic underinvestment."
