Councillor Karina Carlin has welcomed a local environmental initiative by local communities and the Council. She explained; "For many weeks now, Saturday mornings have been a busy time for groups of residents throughout the Strabane District, with several community clean-ups underway, supported by Council's Technical Services Department. Groups of local people, in town estates and villages, - male and female, young and old,- have taken up the challenge to do a big outdoor Spring Clean, to improve the attractiveness of our areas, and to tackle the problems of illegal dumping and littering" Councillor Carlin added;- "Week after week, I have been impressed by the hard work and efforts of local people who are prepared to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in to the Big Spring Clean throughout the District. We have encountered some shocking examples of illegal dumping in some of the most beautiful and picturesque locations, which was disheartening. Yet the positive spirit and attitude of the clean- up volunteers has ensured this initiative is not only good for the environment, but also great craic! For any groups who wish to organise their own community clean up, Council can provide litter-pickers, protective gloves, bin bags and high visibility bibs, and will arrange to collect and remove the bags of rubbish and dumped items."
