Sinn Féin welcomes Safety Improvements to Gortin Road Scheme

Published: 7 April, 2014

Declan McAleer MLA and Councillor Sean Clarke have welcomed the DRD Road Service commitment to amend the scheme on the Gortin Road at Gortnagarn to facilitate cyclists and pedestrians.

Mr McAleer MLA said,

"I attended a meeting in March with local people at the site of road works on Gortin Rd, in the vicinity of Coronation Cottages. They had a number of requests which I supported, relating to the scheme and I wrote to the Divisional Roads Manager Conor Loughrey.

"These included, creating a seamless path for walkers and cyclists by amending kerbing accordingly, tarring a strip of grass at Coronation Cottages and differentiating the strip using stone chippings to increase safety for cyclists. And finally to resurface the path between the junction with Cappagh Road and Gortnagarn Road as it currently in a poor condition. I am delighted that the resurfacing will be programmed for inclusion in the 2014/2015 financial year schedule.

Councillor Clarke said,

"I welcome DRD Road Service's efficient and positive response, the work will greatly improve the pathway benefiting cyclists and walkers. With the increasing popularity of cycling and running, we need to improve local infrastructure to a standard which allows these sports and pastimes to flourish."
