Derg Sinn Féin Councillor Ruairí Mc Hugh has branded an attack on a young nationalist man in Castlederg as 'vicious and nakedly sectarian'.
The assault which happened around midnight on St Patricks night resulted in the man being hospitalised.
Cllr Ruairí Mc Hugh said,
'' This young man was making his way along Main Street in the town on his way to meet friends in a local bar when three loyalists emerged from a car calling him a fenian b******. They then proceeded to beat the man to the ground punching and kicking him leaving him with severe bruising all over his back and chest.
'' Following the assault the young man was left in a dazed and confused state but was able to make his way along Main Street where other people were able to assist him and made contact with his parents. The young man was then taken to hospital by ambulance where he was treated for blows to his back, chest and legs, he remained in hospital overnight for observation.
'' There is a lot of anger in the town over this unprovoked assault but I would urge people to remain calm as the man assaulted has been able to identify his attackers who I'm sure will face the full rigours of the law''.
