Mc Guire welcomes dereliction funding for Newtownstewart

Published: 5 February, 2014

Sinn Féin Councillor Kieran Mc Guire has welcomed confirmation from Strabane District Council that a number of properties currently in poor state in Newtown' are to benefit from the council dereliction fund. Cllr Mc Guire, who has been selected by Sinn Féin to contest the Newtownstewart area in the upcoming council elections in May 2014, has been part of the Sinn Féin team in council who have pursued this issue for a number of years now.

Cllr Mc Guire said

'During the Mourne-Derg visioning exercise, which the council is now moving forward on, dereliction was identified as a problem by many of the consultees in the course of the workshop that was held in Newtown'. Even though many obstacles were placed in councils way, not least the refusal for this type of funding from the previous Department of Environment Minister, Alex Atwood, we tasked council officials to continue on with their work, to carry out surveys on properties in Newtown' with a view to establishing ownership and the type of works that would be required - ie painting, repair works or demolition'

Cllr Mc Guire cont,

'Under this dereliction scheme Newtownstewart will benefit and a number of works will take place including the demolition of one property on St Eugene's Street with repair works taking place on a number of other building throughout the town. So again I welcome this move that will enhance the appearance of Newtown' and congratulate all those involved in seeing this scheme come to fruition.
