Sinn Féín Councillor for the Aghyaran area, Kieran Mc Guire, has welcomed an announced by ARC North West that the DARD Rural Development Programme is to part fund the creation of 22km of walking routes in and around Killeter forest.

Cllr Mc Guire said,

"I would like to welcome this announcement by ARC North West through the Rural Development Programme and also congratulate Strabane District Council for also making the commitment to match fund this initiative. This project has been in the pipeline for many years and was originally to be a cross border route in partnership with Donegal CC'

"The funding now in place will provide for 22km of walking routes throughout the forest, opening up some of the old routes and introducing new ones. This will give the public greater access to the wonderful natural resource that is currently massively under-used.

Cllr Mc Guire continued,

'I welcome Council pursuing this issue, a lot of work has went into this project by council officials and DARD officials in getting a Memorandum of Understanding to allow this wonderful asset on our doorsteps to be utilised by the public. This I believe has the potential to bring many tourists to this area for visiting and recreational purposes and also opens up the possibility of future trails for cycling and mountain biking'
