Secure your right to vote- Sinn Féin

Published: 17 September, 2013

West Tyrone Sinn Féin MP Pat Doherty has urged everyone, 17 years and over, to ensure they secure their right to vote by filling in and returning the 'Individual' Electoral Registration Forms which are currently being delivered to every home across the constituency in what is the first electoral canvas being undertaken by the Electoral Office in over seven years.

He said,

"According to the 2011 Census almost 15% of the eligible population of the 6 counties are not on the electoral register and this statistic has re-enforced Sinn Fein's long-standing lobbying of the Electoral Office that it needed to adopt a more pro-active approach to address the increasing numbers of people who were finding themselves disenfranchised come election time.

"So I very much welcome the fact that we are now seeing the first 6 county wide electoral canvas after a gap of seven years. The old house-hold registration forms have now been replaced with individual registration forms, therefore it is important to make sure that registration forms are returned for everyone in your household in the prepaid envelopes provided by Friday 27 September.

"If you do not receive an individually addressed form they can be obtained from your local Sinn Féin Office, the Electoral Office Tel: 90446688 or you can alternatively download one from www.eoni.org.uk.

"Complete the form with your: Name, Address, Nationality, Date of Birth, National Insurance number and Signature and also ensure that you confirm that you have been resident in the 6 counties for at least 3 months.

"I would urge everyone eligible to ensure you secure your vote now and if you have any problems with this process your local Sinn Fein office will be happy to help you

In May 2010 Sinn Féin's Michelle Gildernew spectacularly defended the Fermanagh & South Tyrone seat against a combined Orange/Tory Unionist candidate by a margin of just 4 votes. Proof that every vote counts"
