Fitzgerald welcomes UN Bedroom tax abolition call

Published: 12 September, 2013

Sinn Féin mid Tyrone Councillor and Chairperson of Omagh District Council, Anne Marie Fitzgerald has welcomed a call by Raquel Rolnik, the UN Special Rapporteur on Housing to the British Government to abolish the so called bedroom tax. The tax is being brought in by the British Tory party under the veil of 'welfare reform'.

Speaking following the findings of a report by Raquel Rolnik Councillor Fitzgerald said:

'The report had found that this so-called bedroom tax was pushing some of the most vulnerable people to the point of despair. Her findings vindicate the stance taken by Sinn Féin in relation to this tax.

'Sinn Féin had previously said we would block the introduction of the 'bedroom tax' if it came before the Assembly. This report by Raquel Rolnik has supported our view that it would target the most vulnerable and we would fully support her call for its abolition.

'In the course of her work in drawing up the report Rolnik had visited, amongst other places, Belfast and said she was 'very shocked' at the effect this tax was having on people. Citing possible breaches of human rights and the effect it was having on particularly the most vulnerable Rolnik called for the abolition of the tax.
