Vigilance required following further spate of thefts-Carlin

Published: 18 July, 2013

Strabane Sinn Féin Cllr Karina Carlin says that following recent spate of thefts/attempting thefts from cars in the Carrick Strand/Ballycolman and Laurel Drive, she has now been contacted by residents in the Jefferson Court/Carricklynn Avenue area of the town about the theft of property from cars and gardens in the area over recent days.
She said,
"Over recent days, I have been receiving further reports of thefts and attempted thefts from gardens and vehicles this time in the Jefferson Court and Carricklynn Avenue area of the town.
"This increasing pattern of different areas being targeted for such thefts is worrying. It points to a planned targeting of areas rather than the actions of an opportunistic thief. Car alarms were set off late at night in the area and were being obviously tested to see if they were unlocked and in one case a dark haired male in his 20's was seen acting suspiciously in gardens of homes in Jefferson Court in the early hours of the morning lending further weight to planned targeting going on.
"I would therefore alert the entire community to be vigilant to the unscrupulous individual/s involved and to take whatever precautionary measures possible in an effort to thwart these thefts including making sure cars and property such as bicycles and tools are secured at night.
"I would also appeal for residents to keep an eye out on the property of neighbours who may be away on holidays. The PSNI needs to prioritise apprehending whoever is behind these recent spate of thefts and free the community from the fear and unease which they are currently causing.
