Introduction of 20mph speed limits ' a welcome development' - Councillor Ruairí Mc Hugh

Derg Sinn Féin Councillor Ruairí Mc Hugh has commended a Roads Service commitment to introduce 20mph speed limits throughout the Churchtown Park, Castlefin Park and Hilllview Park areas within Castlederg, speaking on the issue Councillor Ruairí Mc Hugh said,
'' This issue of reducing the speed limit within these areas of Castlederg was brought to my attention by residents following a road traffic incident last summer when a young girl was lucky to only receive minor injuries after being knocked down by a car. After lobbying from myself and concerned parents to DRD Roads Service officials on this matter it is to be welcomed that DRD Roads Service intend to implement our request as the introduction of a 20mph speed limit will increase safety for the many children who live and play in the area.

'' Surveys have consistently proven that a child's chances of survival after being knocked down by a vehicle are significantly increased when vehicles are limited to a maximum speed of 20mph. In fact, a pedestrian who is hit by a vehicle travelling at 20 mph has a 97% chance of survival - that is a 17% greater chance of survival than if the vehicle were travelling at 30 mph. I would also take the opportunity to commend Roads service for agreeing to implement this 20mph limit and hopefully it will also be rolled out through out other areas of the town in the near future.''
