Strabane Sinn Féin Cllr Maolíosa Mc Hugh has described Education Minister John O Dowd's announcement of a £92m injection into the north's education system over the next two years as a pro-active measure to help alleviate the budgetary pressures schools within all sectors have been under. The Derg based Councillor and Sinn Féin representative on the Western Education and Library Board said, "I would like to congratulate the Minister for this timely interjection that will relieve the stress on the entire system through a prudent dispersal of funding right across the department. "From Aggregated Schools Budget, school maintenance, youth provision as well as helping fund the extension of the Education Maintenance Allowance, this money will have a positive impact in delivering a better learning experience for all of our students and go some way to alleviating the budgetary pressures schools within all sectors have been under. "The many areas of the education system that will benefit from this funding will create more certainty amongst school management and allow for better forward planning in the knowledge that funding for two years has now been ring-fenced. "Once again the Minister has shown himself to be pro-active in listening to and being responsive to ongoing needs within education system and particularly his commitment to putting money into areas of need to tackle inequalities that exist within the system and I welcome that."
