Sinn Fein representatives joined a protest at the Housing Executive sub office at Holmview Terrace in Omagh on Tuesday to show support for the local staff and to recognise the positive role played by Housing Executive staff in transforming social housing across the North over the past 40 years. The protest was called in response to Nelson McCauslands statement on the future of the executive last week. Amongst the Sinn Féin representatives at the protest were local councillors Sean Begley and Marty McColgan.

Both Councillors have an in-depth knowledge of the Housing Executive Cllr Begley sits on the Housing Executive Board, whilst Cllr McColgan is a member of the Omagh Housing Community Network and has worked closely with the executive over many years in his capacity as a community representative.

Speaking at the protest Omagh District Councillor Marty McColgan said:

"We came here today to show our support for the staff and to recognise the good work that they do, there is a wealth of skills, expertise and local knowledge currently within the Housing Executive and in our view it is essential that these skills and expertise are maintained.

"Sinn Féin is supportive of the review of the Housing Executive. All stakeholders, including the Housing Executive itself, recognised the need for a review and fundamental change to reflect current and future needs. Sinn Féin will continue to scrutinise the outworking of this review so any outcomes must ensure an increase in affordable social housing provision, the allocation of housing stock on the basis of objective need and to ensure the rights of tenants continue to be fully protected.
