£1.9 million announced for new Rivers Agency office in Omagh

Published: 11 January, 2013

West Tyrone MLA Declan Mc Aleer has welcomed the decision by Minister Michelle O Neill to invest £1.9 million to develop a new Rivers Agency regional office in Omagh. Enabling works to prepare the site on St Julian's Road will start this month with a completion date of September 2014.

According to Mr Mc Aleer 'We have known for some time that the existing facilities on Woodside Avenue are not fit for purpose. Most of these buildings were constructed in the 1960s; they are cramped and are separated by a work yard through which cars and heavy machinery pass.

'As part of the June Monitoring Round, £350k was secured for the project, and in this current year they have a capital budget allocation of £0.35m, leaving £1.55m required to complete the construction of the building in 2013/14 and 2014/15. £0.465m will be made available through the sale of land and other savings.

Mr Mc Aleer concluded 'This is great news, particularly for the 59 staff who use the building and for the construction industry which is under major pressure. The announcement also underlines the strategic position of Omagh in terms of its proximity to key rivers and its central location within County Tyrone and the wider north west'.
