Call for extension of slurry spreading deadline

Published: 25 September, 2012

Sinn Féin councillor Peter Kelly has said he will be in contact with the Environment Minister Alex Attwood to call for an extension to the deadline of October 15th for spreading slurry.

According to Councillor Kelly such an extension should be considered by the minister:

"Farmers are under severe pressure to have the slurry spread before the current deadline of 15th October. I will be in contact with the Minister Alex Attwood to ask for flexibility in regards the deadline.

"This year has been one of the wettest in many years and as a result of the adverse weather the harvesting of crops and silage has been delayed. The temporary extension, up until the end of October would ease the pressure greatly on farmers to facilitate the spreading of slurry and may also allow for better conditions for spreading. The conditions experienced during the prolonged wet spell have not been appropriate for the spread of slurry.

"The inclement weather has also forced stock to be housed for large periods over the summer instead of being grazed; as a result many farmers are using stocks of silage reserved for the winter to feed cattle.

"Such a scenario was faced last year as well and maybe we should look at ways to mitigate the impact on farmers for the future in similar circumstances. Once small step would be for the minister to show flexibility this year and allow an additional two weeks for the spread of slurry.
