Man in hospital following Fintona Crash

Published: 4 July, 2012

A 60-year-old man has been taken to hospital after an articulated lorry crashed off a bridge and into a river in Fintona.

It happened on the Tattyreagh Road shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

The cab of the vehicle went through the wall of the bridge and ended up in the water.

Ambulance crews helped the driver out.

He was not seriously hurt but was taken to hospital after suffering shock.

Speaking following the incident local councillor Glenn Campbell said:

"We are very fortunate we are not dealing with a fatality this morning".

"I have previously raised concerns about safety along this road. Indeed i had raised concerns with the Rathfragan bridge about 2 or 3 months ago with DRD Roads Service after constituents brought it to my attention. A heavy volume of heavy goods vehicles use the road. Visibility is poor and there is a need for signage, grass/hedge cutting to address this."

"I am asking DRD Roads Service to meet with residents in the area to discuss their concerns"

"In my opinion this bridge needs to be straightened; it would be senseless to restore it to its previous condition."
