Republicans remember Alice Milligan

Published: 9 April, 2012

On Saturday, Republicans assembled at the graveside of poet, playwright and Republican, Alice Milligan. The commemoration was convened by the Milligan/Harte Sinn Féin Cumann and was attended by Republicans from throughout the Omagh area.

During a short address, Cllr Declan Mc Aleer reflected on the life of Alice Milligan, who was born into the Unionist tradition but became a strong advocate for Irish Republicanism. He expressed satisfaction that a book on the life of Alice Milligan which chronicles her pivotal role in the Irish cultural revival was published during the year.

During the commemoration, Omagh Republican, Barry Mc Colgan read aloud the Easter Proclamation, while veteran Republican, James Mc Elduff laid a wreath on behalf of Sinn Féin.
James was interned in the 1950's and again in the 1970's and his father James (Senior) was a personal friend of Alice Milligan
