West Tyrone Sinn Féin -- Building an Ireland of Equals

Welcome for executive fuel payments.

Published: 29 February, 2012

Sinn Fein Mid Tyrone councillor Anne Marie Fitzgerald has welcomed a fuel payment provided by the executive in Stromont to those in receipt of benefits. The payments, which have been released within the past week, range from £75 - £100.

Speaking on the issue councillor Fitzgerald said:

"I welcome the release of this money from the executive to local people to help alleviate fuel poverty. There are nearly a quarter of a million people in the north who will benefit from this welcome and much needed payment.

"It is my understanding that those who qualified for the payment will be those who in the week 12 to 18 December 2011, were in receipt of Pension Credit, Income Support jobseekers Allowance Income Based or Employment Support Allowance income related. Those in receipt of Pension Credit received £100, with all others qualifying receiving £75.

"This is a perfect example of the local assembly delivering for local people. Having spoken to numerous people over the past week they are delighted to have received the payments.

"It is important to note that whilst the British Tory government actually cut this benefit the local government in Belfast decided that they would provide the benefit from within their own budget and extend it to people previously not eligible. It proves beyond doubt the commitment of the executive to help and assist families and individuals, many of whom are finding it financially difficult at present, to make ends meet.CRÍOCH
