Preventing Suicide in the Community

Published: 16 January, 2012

28 people took part in a one day training programme on Saturday (14th January) in Omagh Sinn Féin Office that empowered participants with the skills to tackle suicide in the community.

The course was provided by PIPS (Public Initiative for the Prevention of Suicide) and hosted by Ógra Shinn Féin.

Martin McColgan, Omagh Sinn Féin representative who completed the training on Saturday said,

"Suicide prevention is everyone's business, we all need to be proactive in tackling this epidemic which is the biggest killer of our young people. The training programme equips people in the community with the confidence and the skills to effectively deal with someone who may be at risk of suicide."

"It was an extremely beneficial course and to ensure that more people possess these life saving skills, Sinn Féin in conjunction with our youth wing are organising a number of other Suicide Prevention workshops in the Omagh area in the next few months."
