Welcome for executive fuel payment

Published: 9 December, 2011

Omagh District Councillor Declan McAleer has welcomed a one-off winter fuel allowance payment funded by the executive, which is set to benefit 250,000 people throughout the north. Speaking on the issue the Mid Tyrone councillor said: 'It is my understanding that £100 will be given to those in receipt of pension credits, and those receiving or have recently received treatment for cancer. ?'Additionally £75 will be paid to people in receipt of income support, job seekers allowance and employment and support allowance. 'People will not need to apply for this payment and it will be made automatically to those who are eligible early in the new year. 'I very much welcome this welcome assistance to many families and vulnerable people at this time. This is a demonstration of the commitment of the executive to tackle fuel poverty and is an idle example of the executive delivering for local people. 'Given recent cuts by the British Government to the Winter Fuel Payments this intervention by the executive is timely. 'The current financial pressures on many across the north is clear to see. Daily we hear that many individuals and families are living in or in the danger of slipping into the fuel poverty trap. This announcement will help alleviate these pressures and provide tangible and most welcome assistance to those most in need this winter.CRIOCH
