Sinn Féin supporting 'last resort' strike action by medical secretaries in Western Trust area

Published: 7 November, 2011

The pending industrial action was announced yesterday by NIPSA following a statutory ballot in which 97% of the 33 medical secretaries affected backed the call for strike action.

Following a meeting with a delegation of the medical secretaries affected by the unjust grading disparity in Strabane earlier today the local MLA said,

"This disparity in grading between medical secretaries in the Western Trust area- a disparity which has long been addressed in other Trust areas, has left the 33 affected workers underpaid since 2006. Repeated representations from NIPSA and MLAs of all parties calling upon management to enter into negotiations with the Union to redress this long-standing inequality issue have been met with complete intransigence from management. Therefore, the medical secretaries are now fully justified in embarking on this industrial action on Tuesday in an effort to bring this issue to a head once and for all.

"I, along with other Sinn Féin MLAs in the Western Trust area, are scheduled to meet with the Trust CEO and senior officials on 11 November and as part of a wider issue agenda that is to be discussed we will be particularly pressing The Western Trust to finally end the discrimination against these medical 33 secretaries both in terms of appropriate re-grading as well as in terms of the retrospective repayments that they are fully entitled to."
