Sinn Féin councillor condemns arson

Published: 1 November, 2011

Mid Tyrone Sinn Féin Councillor Anne Marie Fitzgerald has condemned an arson attack on bins belonging to the Dean Maguirc College in Carrickmore. The heavy duty bins were set ablaze in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The local councillor branded the attack as 'senseless' and 'counterproductive'. She said those who carried out the attack were completely out of sync with the great work being undertaken by the local community and the school in particular.

Speaking on the issue councillor Fitzgerald said:

"This act of wanton vandalism is totally unwarranted. The actions of a small minority have left the school with an extra bill to pay. The local school has been at the heart of the local community for 45 years and has contributed a great deal to the lives of local people and the community. This attack is counterproductive and those responsible should reflect and stop their actions immediately.

"Local people take a pride in their community and they are justifiably angry at this attack. The Dean serves a large number of people from a wide catchment area and this attack only serves to distract from the good work going on within the school.
