Local Sinn Féin Omagh town councillor Sorcha McAnespy attended a 'Women in Local Councils' event hosted in Stormont by the Local Government Staff Commission on Tuesday 27th September. The event was addressed by local elected representatives including Jennifer McCann MLA as well as representatives from the Office of the First and Deputy First minister and Belfast City Council.

The showcase event was designed to utilise good practice and related case studies and to celebrate the success of this innovative approach which has been replicated as a model to advance the equality and diversity agenda across the district councils in the north.

Speaking following the event councillor McAnespy said:

"The event took place under the theme of 'Leadership Inspiring Commitment' and was a very successful event. It was great to meet with many more female elected representatives from across the six counties. The event looked at the participation of females in local councils throughout the north both in terms of elected representatives as well as the many women who work behind the scenes in the world of Local Government. Issues such as the lack of female representation in councils as well as barriers facing women becoming involved in politics were all explored. The event was worth while and the speakers provided much food for thought. CRÍOCH
